Taurus Teaching Tips 4:

The Age of Taurus
and the Golden Calf

by Michael Star (c)1998

An extract from Michaels's article, Astrology and the Christian Bible
in STAR SIGNS Astrology Zine, presented here to aid in the understanding of the Sign of Taurus.

The Age of Taurus and the Golden Calf

In The Book of Exodus (and in the film "Exodus") there is an account of Moses coming down from the mountain with the tablets containing The Ten Commandments and discovering that his people had made a "golden calf" and were worshipping it as a pagan "god". A calf is a young "Bull", and the Bull was the symbolic figure for the earlier religion of Mithraism which flourished in "The Age of Taurus". The Bull is the astrological symbol for Taurus, and the Age of Taurus preceded the Age of Aries, as Mithraism preceded Judaism.

Astronomical "Ages" and "The Precession of the Equinoxes"

The order mentioned above (Taurus preceding Aries) appears to be the reverse of the familiar order of the astrological Signs of the Zodiac. This is because the Earth happens to "wobble" or precess in a way which moves its axis of rotation in a very, very slow circle that makes the constellations appear to drift in the opposite direction relative to the Earth.

A similar "wobble" can be seen in a spinning toy top or gyroscope which is not perfectly perpendicular to the floor and appears a little off-balance. Imagine being a tiny human on that toy top and how the walls would appear to shift in position as your little "planet" precessed in a slow circular motion. Remember that you are spinning or "rotating" at the same time as you are "precessing", so the walls will be spinning by, but each time the same spot on the wall goes by it will be just a little bit lower or higher from your viewpoint.

An astronomical Age of about 2100 years (2160) is the time it takes for the Earth's axis to move one-twelfth of the way around in this circular motion (30 degrees), and the effect of this motion is called "the precession of the equinoxes". It can be marked by the Sign the Sun appears in at the Vernal Equinox, the first day of Spring. In our century, it is the constellation of Pisces which rises with the Sun at the Vernal Equinox, which means we are still in the Age of Pisces. The Age of Aquarius is still a century or so in the future for us.

Note that constellations and astrological Signs are not the same thing. Because of the precession effect, the majority of Western Astrologers now reference the Signs to the Vernal Equinox (which makes sense because we live on Earth and this accounts for the change in the Earth's orientation to the stars). While it is the constellation of Pisces which actually appears to rise with the Sun on the day of the Vernal Equinox, the Sign is now named Aries, which is why you see in those tables of Sun Sign cusp dates that the Sign of Aries appears to begin on or near the first day of Spring.

Those tables are simplified and the dates can be off by a day in either direction, for actually it IS the first day of Spring which marks the beginning of the Sign of Aries, and that day is not always on the same date in our man-made calendars. Calendars were designed in accordance with the apparent motion of the Sun, but they don't correspond precisely, which is why we have to include a "leap year" every four years to get the calendar back into synchronization with the Sun.

In determining the astronomical Ages, we again see the "wandering stars" being used, as the Bible says in Genesis 1:14, "for seasons". In this case, the "season" is a lot longer than the four climate-changing seasons caused by the revolution of the Earth around the Sun - it is a "season" of 2160 years, caused by the much slower precession of the Earth about its axis. If you study ancient history, you may see some changes in the "world view" of earthlings when an Age begins, such as the growth of Christianity when the Age of Pisces began, and the growth of Judaism when the Age of Aries ended the Age of Taurus in which Mithraism flourished.

The Age of Aquarius and the Traditional Taurus

Who knows what the Age of Aquarius will bring to our descendents? We can see some early effects of this coming Age in the creation of the "World Wide Web" and all the changes in how earthlings from all nations are becoming more and more "universally" connected; and in how innovations and experimental concepts are now an everyday occurance; and in how an individual can now make his voice heard around the world and can break free from the former monopolies of mass media and mass marketing. These are all "Aquarian" kinds of things, and entirely appropriate for a time we call "the dawning of the Age of Aquarius".

Aquarius is at a 90-degree "square" angle to Taurus, and this means these two Signs are very different in their nature and their strategy. Aquarius, a Fixed Air Sign, seeks constant change and breaks the rules of restrictive old traditions; while Taurus, a Fixed Earth Sign, resists sudden change and is probably more attached to traditional methods and concepts than the other Signs. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" says the Taurean.

Taurus may find all these changes uncomfortable, but we Taureans will have to accept inevitable change, or we will "be dragged kicking and screaming" into the twenty-first century and then into the Age of Aquarius. Give a Taurus a digital cell phone or hand-held computer for his birthday, and help the poor dear get with the program...

I went rather willingly and easily ...but only because this Taurus has his Midheaven in Aquarius, and in 1995 the World Wide Web was a very attractive option for the advancement of my goals and my life work. With this Aquarian influence in my birth horoscope, when I first heard about computers I wanted one, before the average guy could even afford to own one. I wanted a laptop computer before anyone was making them. But here in 1998 I still haven't upgraded some of my software from DOS to Windows, and I hate having to change my place of residence! After all, my Sun still shines through Taurus, so I am still a solid, stubborn, slow-to-change, traditional Taurean at heart.
