Venus in your Horoscope
Think "symbolically" and remember that Venus or Aphrodite was the mythological Godess of Love and Beauty. Her traits are clues to the symbolic function of the planet Venus in Astrology.
The Sign which contains the planet Venus in your birth horoscope (birth chart) indicates the way you seek to give and receive affection and love; and how you create and appreciate beauty and balance; and how you form close relations and act in those relationships - and how you want your intimate friends or lovers to "relate" to you.
Venus is the "ruler" of two Signs in everyone's horoscope, Taurus and Libra. What Venus wants to express is most easily and effectively accomplished using the typical strategies of those two Signs of which she is said to be "the ruler" - and that's why Venus "rules" those Signs.
Through Taurus she can best expresses her physical sensuality and her desire for physical sensations and physical pleasures through the five senses. Venus in Taurus always seeks physical "comfort" too!
Venus in Taurus usually indicates a person who is naturally "sensual" and who expresses affection by "touching" or hugging or caressing - and who appreciates food and music and all the "physical" pleasures more than most people. Physical attractiveness will be important to this person, and their voice is usually attractive, perhaps "seductive". This person will likely be seen as "sensual" or "earthy" or "natural" in some way, and be "comfortable" to a partner in a relationship.
Taurus is an "Earth Sign", which is why Venus in Taurus expresses herself more through the "physical" - feeling through the body and its five physical senses - and thus is more "physical" than "intellectual" in her appreciation for love and romance and beauty.
Through Libra she can best express her intellectual sense of harmony and balance - which is the essence of "beauty" in art, music, poetry, and the human form.
Venus in Libra usually indicates a person with good taste and a talent or interest in "the arts" - and with an "attractive" personality which makes it easy to form relationships, and to maintain "peace and harmony" in relations with most people. Affection is more likely to be expressed in words or writing, such as by compliments, romantic whispers, or pretty poetry. "A beautiful mind" may be more important to this person than physical attractiveness, though "beauty" in all forms is always important to Venus. This person is likely to be seen as "a romantic" or "a charmer".
Libra is an "Air Sign", which is why Venus in Libra expresses herself more through the "mind" - thinking and communicating - and is thus more "mental" than "physical" in her appreciation for love and romance and beauty. (Sometimes Venus in Libra gets too focused on a "mental image" of a perfect love relationship and then judges potential partners against this abstract ideal, which few real-life lovers will be able to compete with. So they end up being criticized or rejected, or relentlessly "worked on" to try to make them change into that ideal image.)
If your birth chart has Venus in the sign of Taurus or Libra, you will likely express the related Venus functions more strongly than most people, for Venus is "at home" in those two signs whose natural strategies are most conducive to expressing her symbolic function.
Venus attains her desires by attracting, like the flower attracts the bee with its color and sweet nectar, to lure it into acting as the agent of its fertilization. It may not sound very romantic, but those pretty plants create beautiful colors and sweet smells not for us humans to appreciate, but only to attract "the birds and the bees" which will help fulfill the plants' inherent "desire" to get pollenated and reproduce. I can't help but notice that this is not unlike a lady who makes herself pretty and perfumed and ends up sitting in a singles bar with a desire to get "polluted" and "reproduce". :)
Either example would illustrate a valid Venus function and strategy (except the "getting polluted" part, which was only intended to play on a bad pollenation pun). On the other hand, using alcohol to release some inhibitions might actually be a valid "strategy" which aids in attaining the goal of "attracting" a mate - and finding them attractive. You know that old saying, "The more I drink, the better you look!" Okay, I'll stop now before these word games get out of hand. (Mercury in Gemini made me do it.)
By the way, if you have Venus in Gemini in your birth chart, you are likely to enjoy the word games and witty banter with a prospective partner or close friend. Venus in Gemini is a "flirt" who will use wit and words to attract - and will be attracted to someone "who has a way with words". Clever conversations can be quite seductive. I would guess that Venus in Gemini people are the most likely to use Internet chat rooms and email and long-distance telephone to carry on a romantic relationship or an intimate friendship - because one of the strategies of Gemini is "communicating", and these are all ways to use "communication" as a strategy in expressing the Venus function of "relationship". A Venus is Gemini person is more likely than most people to fall in love over the phone, or by reading letters. Maybe romantic Venus in Libra too, for both are Air Signs which relate through the intellect and would respond strongly to a "meeting of minds".
If Venus in your own birth chart is located in one of the other Signs, the way Venus expresses her function will correspond to the natural "strategies" of that Sign.
Also, any Planets in the Sign of Taurus or Libra will also express their function with those same basic "strategies" which Venus can most easily express in Taurus or Libra. The Planet's "purpose" or "goals" will be different, depending on which Planet is involved, but the "means" or "methods" by which that Planet's function is expressed may be quite similar to those used by Venus - because Venus rules Taurus and Libra. In other words, the "how" may seem similar, but the "why" will be different.

In any person's birth horoscope (also called the "birth chart"), Venus will be in one of the twelve signs of the zodiac, but will never be more than two signs away from the sign of the Sun in their birth chart, because Venus is so close to the Sun and never appears very far away when we observe it from Earth. Venus takes an average of one month to travel through a sign, but that is only the "average".
Unlike the Sun, which moves about one degree per day, the planet Venus appears to move slower or faster across the zodiac at different times of the year, and sometimes appears to reverse direction (called "retrograde motion"). There is no regular motion, so the dates when Venus is located in a certain Sign can not be found from a simple table of dates like the ones used for Sun Signs. Your Venus Sign and the exact position of Venus in that Sign is found by calculating your unique
birth chart for the actual time of your birth. (The Venus Sign for anyone born 1940-1959 can be found in my
simplified ephemeris.)
